It is named after one of its original inventors and is widely used for both VHF and UHF television bands. The Yagi structure is easy to recognize: a long horizontal boom with multiple parallel metal elements mounted at right angles along its length.A typical TV Yagi antenna consists of three main types of elements: the driven element, the reflector, and one or more directors. The driven element is usually a half-wave dipole connected to the coaxial feed line that carries the signal to the television or tuner. Behind this driven element, on the boom, sits a slightly longer element called the reflector. In front of the driven element are several slightly shorter elements known as directors. The number and spacing of these directors largely determine the antenna’s gain and directivity.The operating principle of a Yagi antenna is based on constructive and destructive interference of radio waves. When television signals arrive from the desired direction, the directors and reflector interact with the electromagnetic field so that energy is concentrated at the driven element. This produces higher gain in a single, preferred direction and reduces reception from unwanted directions. As a result, a TV Yagi can improve reception in fringe areas and help reject interference or multipath reflections.For television use, Yagi antennas can be designed for narrowband operation, such as only VHF or only UHF, or for wider bandwidth to cover both bands. The physical length of the elements and their spacing on the boom are carefully calculated based on wavelength. Lower-frequency VHF models tend to be larger, with a longer boom and longer elements, while UHF Yagis are more compact.Installation height and orientation are critical to performance. The antenna should be mounted as high as practical, often on a mast above the roofline, to minimize obstructions and reduce signal loss from buildings, trees, or terrain. The boom is pointed toward the broadcast towers, and the polarization (usually horizontal for television) must match the transmitted signal. A quality coaxial cable with low loss is used to connect the antenna to the indoor equipment, and a preamplifier may be added near the antenna if signals are very weak.A TV Yagi offers several advantages: high forward gain, relatively narrow beamwidth, and good front-to-back ratio, which reduces interference from behind. It remains a popular choice for cord-cutters and viewers in rural or semi-rural areas who rely on free broadcast television.
